1.6 Billion Students! – More than 90% of the world’s total enrolled student population- were affected during the pandemic outbreak in 2020. While the children cheered the break from school, parents and teachers were tasked with finding new ways to keep kids learning.

In India, people were quick to adapt to virtual classes, which also lead to most low-income households getting their first smartphones. However, a significant number of students could not afford and/or access virtual learning. There were many silent heroes who rose to the occasion to ensure no child was left behind.

#5 Shantappa Jadammanavar

Mr. Shantappa steps into the shoes of a teacher every day before he wears the boots of a police officer. A hero on duty and off duty, Shantappa Jadammanavar is a police Sub-Inspector from Bangalore, Karnataka. Every morning since the pandemic started, Mr. Shantappa teaches Vedic Mathematics, General Knowledge, and value education to around 30 students from migrant worker settlements in the city. He even incentivizes students who complete their homework with treats or a geometry box/stationaries.

His service is recognized by the Education Ministry of Karnataka and many other benefactors have pitched in to help him in this noble cause.

#4 Four Engineering Friends

Arvind, Bhavanishankar, Sarathas, and Vignesh, a group of four engineers and friends have been donning the hats of teachers amidst the pandemic. In the village of Thondaiman Oorani a village in Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu, there are over 1500 residents, most of whom are farm laborers and migrant workers. The four friends have made it their everyday mission to teach the children of the laborers and bridge the education gap caused by the digital divide.

#3 Moumita B

Moumita is a chemistry teacher who hails from Pune. She is a perfect example of Indian jugaad (unconventional/frugal innovations). Despite having fewer resources herself, Moumita built several makeshift contraptions to set up an interactive classroom environment to teach her students. This self‑motivated teacher is also an internet sensation.

#2 Teachers of Jharkhand

A group of passionate teachers from Jharkhand’s government school carried a rather unique maneuver to help their students study amidst the pandemic. The teachers adopted students who lacked access to the internet and smartphones. They visited the students every week and lend their own devices for students to study. They also personally guided them to ensure they stay at par with the students who have access to all the resources.
